My parents, knowing I really did love photography and would treasure my camera for the rest of my life, thought that it was worthy enough of an investment to buy me a camera within the $200-300 range for now (thank you mommy and daddy). If anybody has some good suggestions, please do share. Anything is appreciated.
The choices we think are likely - Konica Minolta Z10 and Cannon S1 IS. The Z10's lens shakes and doesn't have sound to movie with 8x optical zoom. (Sound is preferable b/c of trips.) S1's reaction time and focusing time is much slower than Z10 but has sound to movie and image stabilizer lens with 10x optical zoom. From looking at sample pictures though, I like Z10's quality better. Since it doesn't have sound and shakes at the lens though, it seems like it won't be a choice.... Any of your thoughts are heartily welcomed with embracing arms.
I think I may just wait till Christmas time when sales are everywhere and possibly new models will come out. Question is, can I wait that long? I still have quite a bit of photos from the Cannon A75 to touch up and submit though. We'll see what the future holds....

carbonation scares me.
but let me think... i'm pretty happy with my canon ixus400, but it's crap at short range... the powershot series from canon seems to be very good to me, 'cause you can change the lenses and you can also buy cheap, original uw-cases...
but if you really like to invest some money into a pretty, pretty piece of hardware, i'd suggest you try the eos 300d.... a colleague of mine bought hers two months ago when she was in malaysia... and this thingie (not my colleague...
you see, i'm pretty into canon cameras, but i think they have a good cost/features ratio...
do you have some other special features in mind? lenses? resolution?

I don't have a particular set of features in mind - just a decent one that I can manipulate and keep atleast through high school and college.
I didn't know that powershot had nice cheap uw cases.... tempting.... except there's not much interesting underwater shots I can do around here. Landlocked. I don't think I'm going to get an eos yet, probably just a step down for money's sake. our school newspaper provides their photographers w/ cannon eos though (the camera still belongs to the school, students just borrow it). when I first saw that they had it, I was like ....wow... awesome camera... where did the money come from.... Thanks for suggestion
